  • Each year, more Korean American women get breast cancer than the year before, by about 3% to 5% every year. (Cancer journal, 2026)
  • Risk peaks between age 40–49 for women in Korea, while it is between age 65–74 in the U.S. (Korean Breast Cancer Society, 2024; NCI SEER)
  • In Korea, women who get breast cancer have a 94% chance of surviving 5+ years — especially with early detection. (Cancer Research and Treatment, 2026)
  • In Korea in 2023, breast cancer had the highest incidence of any cancer among women, meaning it had the most newly diagnosed cases.
(Cancer Research and Treatment, 2026)

Screening Basics

What it is: A simple test (usually an X-ray of the breast called a mammogram) that checks for breast cancer before you feel any symptoms.

Who should get screened

  • All women, starting at age 40
  • Higher risk (start screening earlier): BRCA1/2 mutation, strong family history, prior chest radiation, high-risk lesions

For more information, please see the American Cancer Society Recommendations.

How often

U.S. guideline Every 1–2 years, discuss with your doctor.
Korea guideline Every 2 years, though annual may catch cancer earlier.

Do you need a referral?

  • Depending on your health insurance plan, a physician's referral may be required prior to receiving screening services.

Where to get a referral: Primary Care Provider (PCP) or OB/GYN.

Where to get screened: Hospitals or radiology centers (many with dedicated breast screening centers).

If abnormal: Please see Section 6: Abnormal Result.

Symptoms to Know

  • Lump or thickening in the breast or underarm
  • Change in breast size
  • Skin changes (redness, flaking, hardening)
  • Nipple discharge (not breast milk)
  • Nipple changes (redness, thickening, scaliness)
  • Know what's normal for your breasts:
    • Be familiar with the normal look and feel of your breasts and recognize any changes
    • Note: Should not replace screening tests and breast exams from a provider.

For more information, please see the National Breast Cancer Foundation's Signs and Symptoms of Breast Cancer.

Risk Factors

  • Being female, older age, family history of breast cancer
  • Estrogen exposure
  • Smoking / alcohol use
  • Past radiation treatment to the chest
  • Being overweight
  • Eating a lot of processed or fatty foods

For more information, please see the CDC's Breast Cancer Risk Factors.

Note: Hereditary mutations account for only a minority of breast cancers (roughly 5–10%), and most cases are sporadic. (Apostolou & Fostira, 2013)

(Apostolou & Fostira, 2013)

Abnormal Result

  1. An abnormal result does NOT mean cancer. Fewer than 1 in 10 women called back for more testing actually have cancer.
  2. Next step: diagnostic mammogram and/or ultrasound (more detailed imaging) — results often same-day.
  3. If still unclear: A biopsy is the only way to know for sure. A small tissue sample is taken and checked under a microscope. Most biopsy results are not cancer.
  4. You'll get results plus a letter summarizing the findings and when to schedule the next screening date.

For more information, please see the American Cancer Society's Getting Called Back After a Mammogram.
